Flagfontein Prospect
The prospecting rights on this area are currently under review with the DME.
Background
The southern side of Flagfontein lies within 5 km of the N1 national road between Cape Town and Johannesburg. The village of Leeu-Gamka lies some 20 km to the south-west of the prospect. The relief over the prospect is fairly low with wide and shallow river and stream beds.
Tributaries of the Leeu River (which eventually becomes the Gamka River) rise on the prospect or flow through it in a southerly direction. The Leeu-Gamka Dam on the Leeu River lies within a 2 km distance of the south-western boundary of the prospect. All runoff from the prospect will reach this important drainage system. Compared with the Company’s other prospects, the Flagfontein prospect is much closer to infrastructural components, such as the N1 national road (5 km), the Leeu-Gamka Dam (2 km) and the village of Leeu-Gamka (20 km).Geology
The Flagfontein Prospect is also underlain by large areas (greater than 15 km2 combined) of sandstone formations. The potential of these sandstones is not known. As described in Section 4.6 of the SRK Report, geological mapping completed in the late 1970s by the Geological Survey does not show any of the known target sandstone units outcropping on the Flagfontein Prospect. Large portions of the Flagfontein prospect are underlain by the Boomplaats Member, which also contains significant sandstone units.
Mineralisation
The mineralisation of the Flagfontein Prospect is unknown.
